Hello! I’m back from two weekends in a row of traveling and we’ve hit a new milestone!
My pal Abdullah, who graciously offered to help on this project, sent me the first background for the short, establishing the style we’ll be using for all of the layouts.
The reference I’d given him was a lot of very geometric and graphic landscapes. I wasn’t interested in approaching the BG and layout design for this short as a total mimicry of the art style in the shows I’m parodying - we leaned more in a Steven Universe direction. Abdullah and I both called out Eyvind Earle in our kickoff, which is a striking style I love to see in animation.
Hopefully this is easy enough to replicate and not terribly time consuming to paint more of. Abdullah is putting together a design packet for this now, and we’ll be kicking off another artist or two to help out later this week.
Also: Barney has a turnaround!
This means that ALL of the characters have turnarounds (that need them) and I officially am done with character design!!
No, the moon does not count. That one can be a prop (hahaha).
In other news, my contract ended on Friday, so this short is now my full time job. I’m headed into animation this week, but I’ll be starting by brushing up on some skills first, so don’t expect any major animation updates next Sunday.
I got my covid and flu shots yesterday morning! I every covid vax so far has given me intense cold symptoms, but this one was milder (for me at least). I ALMOST didn’t write this update today because I’ve been fatigued, but the fog lifted as I was watching Drag Race Global All Stars and marvelling at how the worst dresses in a sewing challenge were somehow safe.
I’ll take a couple hours of fatigue over actually getting sick any day. Get your shots!
kbye
I love the layout!
That layout is gorgeous!
And yay design milestone done!
